What
is a URL?
A URL
is the "address" you
type into your browser to take
you to a website (ie: http://www.whirldesign.com).
URL is the abbreviation for
Universal Resource Locator,
and it represents a way of specifying
the addresses of web pages,
files, newsgroups, and even
email users. Most web page addresses
begin with "http://".
How
will people find my website?
Your pages
must be built properly and they
must be registered to various
search engines, directories and
lists, in order to have maximum
exposure to the world. When I
design a site, I carefully consider
how to best maximize its visibility
to the search engines, crawlers,
spiders and robots.
Who
owns the website?
Once the
website is posted to the internet
it belongs to you.
How
long will it take you to complete
my website?
Completion
time of a website depends primarily
upon how quickly you can supply
all of the information needed
for the site. Under optimum conditions
a website can take as little as
two weeks.
What
is a domain name?
A
domain name is the term for the "dot.com", "dot.net", "dot.org"
name that you enter into the address line of the browser
to get to a site. It is the name of your website. If you
have a website, you need a place to put it. Some Internet
Service Providers (ISP) provide free space for you to
publish a web site. The name that you have to type into
the browser to get to these sites can be very cumbersome
and hard for people to remember. For example, if you have
free space from you ISP, your website address may read something
like this: http://members.yourisp.com/membername/websitename/.
On the other hand, if you purchase your own domain name,
that address would simply be www.yourpage.com - much easier
to include on business cards and correspondence!
How
do I get my own domain name?
Originally,
domains were purchased at an annual
charge of $35 (and up) and were
available from a limited number
of sources. Domains are now available
for as little as $3.99 a year. Once
you buy a domain name, you must
then find a server to "host" it.
If requested, I can assist you
in securing both a domain name
and a reliable web host.
How
long will it take to get my
domain name?
This process
can take up to two weeks from
the purchase of the name to the
availability of the name to the
public. I will discuss the pros
and cons of domain names/free
hosting with you in the consultation
phase. If you choose to purchase
a domain, I can guide you through
the simple procedure and help
you find a low-cost, reliable
hosting service, for about
$100 per year.
Who
owns the domain name?
It will
be purchased in YOUR NAME using
your address. You will own this
name and you will be responsible
for annual payments to retain
this name for your use.
What
is a web host?
A web host
is a computer ("server") that
maintains a constant connection
with the Internet and makes your
website available to the world.
These hosts keep a copy of all
the files that make up your website
and "serve" them up to browsers
on demand. They usually have technical
support departments that help
you with problems encountered
on your web space.
Can
I get FREE hosting?
Free hosting
for your website can be provided
for you if you don't mind banners
or pop-ups inserted into your
website. This is the price you
pay - you don't get something
for nothing. These banners are
advertisements placed in the upper
pixels of your web pages or pop-ups
that refresh every two minutes.
You can choose to start off with
free hosting and later pay to
have the banners removed. Of course, "free" web
hosts generally don't provide
as much help as hosts who charge
for the space.
Can
I preview my website?
I will
publish your site to a private
web space for your viewing before
I place the site on your domain
host. You can see how your site
will look and make final changes
at that point.
What
do I get for my money?
You will
get a website designed to load
quickly and be viewable in the
majority of web browsers that
are currently being used on the
web today. My websites are designed
to be professional and unique
to you. I want people to visit
your site, stay awhile, come back
and tell their friends. I am as
proud of your website as you are
and want it to represent my abilities. |
